I decided long ago, never to walk in anyone’s shadows
If I fail, if I succeed
At least I live as I believe
No matter what they take from me
They can’t take away my dignity
Because the greatest love of all
Is happening to me
I found the greatest love of all
Inside of me
The greatest love of all
Is easy to achieve
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all

And as I started reaching deeper I realized that most of the blues of that day was done by men. Women just didn’t have the nerve.

It’s an interesting process in trying to type this out because I don’t believe I’ve fully comprehended the fact she is actually gone from our world, since she has shaped such a large part of our culture for more than half a century in setting a precedent for what it is to be a movie star, humanitarian, and possessor of otherworldly beauty that has moved gracefully at the front of the march whenever we think about the Golden age of Hollywood. Both the adjectives Golden and Hollywood are so prestigious in two different ways, and I can’t imagine a woman that embodied both of those terms together more in such a delicious blend than Elizabeth Taylor. I think what always drew me to Elizabeth was the fact that despite the fact she was one of the most recognizable names in the world and inherently synonymous with the word “glamor”, there is something so distinctly humane about her at the same time. When you look into those violet diamond eyes, a prize trait on another level in and of themselves, there isn’t a bored narcissism of a woman who was born with it all, made all the more extraordinary by the fact that she actually was. There is a constant swimming sensitivity marked with good humor in those eyes - it shows in her demeanor, the way she speaks, in her actions, it permeates everything she ever does. I feel that she carries with her such the perpetual mother archetype, which is something she was clearly acutely aware of herself with her awesome quote, “I’ve been through it all, baby. I’m Mother Courage.” Now, what really endeared me to Dame Elizabeth Taylor finally was the company she chose to keep. I’ve noticed that certain men I’ve always empathized and been fascinated with on a deep level were genius extraordinaires, Montgomery Clift and Michael Jackson, two men who were masters at their craft, however painfully misunderstood and isolated in their respective professions. James Dean is another one of these boyish, lost soul types that happened to be considered another good friend of Elizabeth’s as well - certainly Richard Burton, the great master of the classical stage and embodiment of Classical masculinity had what was always an apparent soft side to him, and managed to find a very easy niche into this woman heart. These hypersensitive men - these deeply private men - all chose to seek her out not for her superficial qualities, because they recognized something in her that was a safe haven. Intelligent, warm and high spirited, forever the bleeding heart, she loved all of them and all of those men revered her on the highest level for the nonjudgement she gave their more unsavory demons, and I don’t see how you cannot respect and be taken aback by a woman like that. A human being like that. Elizabeth was always forward moving - she refused to get caught up in fashion trends and was forever innovative in her style (which could be a great or bad thing, let’s be honest here haha), never one to let public opinion dissaude her from her hearts desire, she married several times in a eras where even a small separation was met with social excommunication, always defended the honor of Montgomery Clift and Michael Jackson even when their reputations had been torn to shreds, never hesitated for a second to support HIV/AIDs back when scientists thought that even the slightest contact with the infected would be sure to bring about the disease for yourself. And to what end? This was a woman that had everything - and that wasn’t enough for her. She needed internal fulfillment, and never hesitated to experiment in her emotional life to bring that about. I love you, Elizabeth Taylor. You are an idol of femininity, audacity, and the human spirit to me. You are eternal.

commanderspock | squintyoureyes | redlightpolitics

I loved her movies and her persona and her beauty and her aura and everything. But my favorite moment was when nobody was talking about HIV and AIDS and the stigma behind it and she was one of the first celebrities to openly get behind the efforts to…
