This scene between Marlon Brando and Eva Marie Saint was partly improvised; during rehearsals Saint accidentally dropped her glove and Brando went along with it rather than break character. Elia Kazan, the director, liked it so much that he had the actors repeat it for the final take. Kazan said about the scene:

The glove was his way of holding her. Furthermore, whereas he couldn’t, because of this tension about her brother being killed, demonstrate any sexual or loving feeling towards her, he could towards the glove. And he put his hand inside the glove, you remember, so that the glove was both his way of holding on to her against her will, and at the same time he was able to express through the glove something he couldn’t express to her directly.

In The Godfather Trilogy, the camera lingers over 20 times on oranges. Some interpreted this presence as an indication of imminent death or danger for the character interacting with the fruit. “It started out as an accident”, said Coppola in DVD commentaries, “but once we realized we had used oranges so frequently in the first movie, we used them purposefully in the others.”  The saga ends with Michael dying, an orange in his hand. The money that came with A Streetcar Named Desire was less important to me, however, than something else: every night after the performance, there would be seven or eight girls waiting in my dressing room. I looked them over and chose one for the night. For a twenty-four-year-old who was eager to follow his penis wherever it could go, it was wonderful. It was more than that; to be able to get just about any woman I wanted into bed was intoxicating. I loved parties, danced, played the congas, and I loved to fuck women—any woman, anybody’s wife. Sometimes I did insane things.

What are you gonna do? Nice college boy, didn’t want to get mixed up in the family business. Now you want to gun down a police captain. Why? Because he slapped you in the face a little? What do you think this like the Army where you can shoot ‘em from a mile away? No you gotta get up like this and, badda-bing, you blow their brains all over your nice Ivy League suit.

Madness of a different flavor permeated the screen adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ hit play A Streetcar Named Desire, and with White Heat, audiences saw aspects of human behavior previously denied them by Hollywood studios.  This seldom-seen shot from the Elia Kazan production depicts the pivotal scene in which Stanley Kowalski (Marlon Brando) attacks Blanche DuBois (Vivien Leigh).
